Mitt Romney Voices Support for David French, Potential Third Party Candidate

Hours after the news broke that David French may be planning an independent run in the 2016 election, Mitt Romney expressed his support for the potential candidate.

On Twitter, Romney heaped praise onto the National Review writer, stopping short of an official endorsement but noting that he wants to hear what French has to say.

Over the weekend, conservative political analyst Bill Kristol wrote on Twitter that an “impressive” third-party candidate with “a real chance” would soon launch a campaign. On Tuesday, Bloomberg Politics revealed that Kristol was talking about David French, conservative lawyer and National Review writer.

David French could not be reached for comment in the days prior to this announcement, but he finally took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to express thanks for all the support.

Bloomberg noted that French has not actually decided whether to launch a campaign but that he is open to the prospect.

If French does launch a bid for the White House, he will likely become the face of the #NeverTrump movement. This group is made up of conservatives who refuse to vote for Donald Trump in the general election, feeling as if he does not represent their party. Mitt Romney himself is a part of that group, and the Massachusetts governor recently said he has been speaking out against Trump because “that’s how I can sleep at night.”
