International pop artist Ricky Martin publicly announced his support of Hillary Clinton in December 2015. As first reported by Buzzfeed, Martin endorsed Clinton ahead of an Orlando event, which targeted Florida’s Puerto Rican community. Clinton has sought to position herself as the champion for Latinos, and Martin has openly criticized presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump for his comments on Mexican immigrants entering the United States. Martin, who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has taken a public stand on issues related to Hispanics and gay rights. In an op-ed published by Univision, Martin urged fellow Latinos to stand up and fight against Trump's "xenophobia." The 39 year-old singer of hits such as his 1999 single "Livin' la Vida Loca" has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. Martin revealed he was gay in 2010 after more than a decade in the international spotlight. A few months later, Martin opened up about his sexuality in a TV interview with Oprah Winfrey. Since then, he has been touted as a gay role model, especially for Latin Americans. Martin’s charity and advocacy work as a UNICEF ambassador has focused on combating child labor and human trafficking. (Getty)
