Beyonce showed her support for Hillary Clinton at a New York City fundraiser in May 2015. Clinton tweeted a photo of Beyonce at the event and captioned it, "Say you'll Bey on Team #Hillary2016, too.” A nod from the pop superstar could help persuade an important group of voters to consider backing her candidacy, young female voters.
Beyonce and her husband, Jay-Z have been longtime supporters of President Barack Obama. The superstar couple hosted a fundraiser to raise money for Obama's re-election. Beyonce also sang at his inauguration in 2013. In the past, she has indicated that she prefers to keep her political views to herself, saying "maybe one day I will speak of my political beliefs, but only when I know what I’m talking about.” It seems she's comfortable making political statements now. Beyonce’s song, “Formation,” references police brutality along with other social issues. There was also her Super Bowl performance, which stirred some controversy. CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller reported that Beyonce used the global halftime stage to showcase her political message about racism and police brutality. "Anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken," Beyoncé clarified, after outrage ensued online following her performance, which included outfits that resembled the uniforms the Black Panthers once wore. "I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let's be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things. If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me." There were others that felt Beyonce took the performance too far. (Getty)
