Five people are dead and seven more injured after a shooting at a Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas.

This shooting came after the deaths of two black men, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, at the hands of police officers, an issue which had already sparked a fierce debate among U.S. politicians and presidential candidates.

Following the Dallas shootings, everyone from Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to Ted Cruz and Harry Reid expressed their grief at the loss of life in Texas, with those in both parties releasing similarly worded statements. Trump even made reference to the deaths of Castile and Sterling, who he had not previously discussed.

In the aftermath of the shooting, both presidential candidates cancelled campaign events they had scheduled for Friday.
