During a speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference today, Texas Senator Ted Cruz was awkwardly cut off and forced to leave the stage before he was finished speaking.
Cruz delivered remarks on Thursday at the religious organization’s “Road to Majority Conference,” which took place at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Texas senator thanked those in attendance for their prayers, passion, time and energy.
“Thank you for speaking out and working to retake our nation,” Cruz said.
Suddenly, Faith and Freedom Coalition Southern Regional Director Virginia Galloway was introduced while Cruz was still on stage. Cruz seemed surprised by this interruption, watching as Galloway took the stage. As Galloway entered, the senator threw up his hands and seemed to be making some sort of joking comment about the fact that he was being rushed off, but by this point, his microphone was no longer on.
Cruz finally waved and got off the stage as Virginia Galloway prepared to speak.
This awkward moment called to mind a moment during the 2016 Republican presidential primary in which Jeb Bush was speaking at the New Hampshire Rotary Luncheon when he was suddenly cut off.
“That’s it?” Bush asked. “Thank you. They’re kicking me out the door! They’re kicking me out the door.”
Bush then began walking to the left side of the room before realizing that his table was to his right, finally making his way back to his seat without having finished his speech.
Also speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference today was Donald Trump himself, with this taking place as fired FBI Director James Comey testified before Congress. Trump in his speech told the evangelical community that they are under siege but that he will continue standing up for them as president.
“We will always support our evangelical community and defend your right and the right of all Americans to follow and to live by the teachings of their faith,” Trump said. “And as you know, we are under siege. You understand that. But we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever, you watch.”
