Kwik-Hang on ‘Shark Tank’: A Look Inside the Quick & Easy Curtain Rod Brackets

kwikhang.com

Kwik-Hang entered the Shark Tank with their curtain rods that you just tap into the top of your window. Without making holes in the walls or the need for nails or screws, they make the hanging process as seamless as possible.

We interviewed Derrek Burr, whose late father, Thomas, invented the product. It is a family-run business, with him running the day-to-day operations and his mother Judy taking care of the order processing as well as the warehousing and shipping.

As for the billowing future of the company, Burr hopes to one day partner with big-box retailers like Lowe’s, Home Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Here’s what else he told us about…

Their Start on eBay

When my dad came up with the idea, he didn’t really make a solid prototype. He bent a piece of cardboard into what he thought it should look like, and took it to a manufacturer and asked him if he could make it. The manufacturer made 10 sets and my dad listed them on eBay and realized maybe he had something.

The Surrealness of Being in the ‘Tank’

(ABC/Michael Desmond)

It was pretty intimidating at first, specially when the doors opened and I started walking down that long hallway and I had my first glimpse at the Sharks. It was surreal because I felt like I was just watching the show but then soon realized it was my turn to go. I was definitely prepared which helped calm my nerves, but you’re never really ready.

His Advice to Future Contestants-To Do Their ‘Homework’

I would tell them to make sure they do their homework. I went back every season and wrote down every question ever asked by every Shark. I made sure I had an answer and would make people randomly quiz me. You can never prepare enough!

Plans for the Future

We are always looking for new ways to innovate and expand our product line by introducing new products. My dad early on listened to what the customers wanted and that’s how he started our product line we have today. We definitely want to start by offering a few more colors following the current trends of what’s being sold in curtain rods. Right now we are only selling the hardware but we are going to be getting back selling curtain rods as well. When I took over the company, I needed to scale things back a bit to get a handle on it, but now I think we are at point where we need to start growing.
