Hampton Inn Active Shooter in Dearborn, Michigan, Police Say

Michigan State Police say an active shooter situation is unfolding at a Hampton Inn in Dearborn, Michigan. The suspect is barricaded in the hotel in an ongoing standoff, and police have cleared the area.

“The barricaded gunman has been taken into custody without incident. Michigan Ave is still closed and will be as the investigation continues. This will be our final update,” Michigan State Police eventually tweeted.

One victim, a clerk, died, according to ABC News.

The active shooter scare broke out on Thursday afternoon on October 6, 2022. It’s unclear how many people have been injured or killed, but The Detroit News reported that multiple victims may be involved, and some people might be hiding in stairwells.

“There is a current active shooting scene at the Hampton Inn, 22324 Michigan Ave in Dearborn. This situation is active and dangerous. Stay away from the scene,” Michigan State Police wrote on twitter.

Police Were Clearing the ‘Entire Area Around the Hotel’ Because the Suspect Was Still Opening Fire

Michigan State Police wrote that the situation was still ongoing.

“UPDATE: There are still shots being fired by the suspect. Troopers and officers are working on clearing the entire area around the hotel. Please stay away from the area as this is an active situation and extremely dangerous to the public,” they tweeted.

The scene was still active after 3 p.m. “Update: Dearborn Police are still negotiating with the suspect in the hotel working towards a peaceful resolution. We continue to ask people to stay away from downtown Dearborn as this situation is fluid and could change,” MSP tweeted.

“There was some type of dispute with the hotel staff … it revolved around money,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said, according to The Detroit News. “We’re all working towards a peaceful resolution.”

“I would implore him to please come out peacefully. Nobody wants to see anybody else get hurt as a result of this incident,” Shahin said. “At this point, it’s going to be a waiting game.”


Videos Emerged Showing Officers Rushing to the Scene

Videos showed law enforcement responding to the scene of the active shooter scare.

Fox2 Detroit reported that one person is dead inside the Hampton Inn, and the shooter was barricaded inside.

The motive and suspect identity are not yet clear. According to ClickonDetroit, the suspect is contained on the third floor of the hotel.

“It’s kind of like terrifying to think something so bad could happen so close to home, especially when you’re supposed to feel safe,” said Hian Beydoun, 20, who lives near the Hampton Inn, to The Detroit News. According to MLive, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.

DuVall Elementary School wrote on its website, “There is a situation outside the building and we are not allowing anyone into the school at this time. All of our staff and students are safe and our learning and day is continuing. There will be no outside activity at DuVall.”

This is preliminary information. It’s not uncommon for there to be contradictory reports early on in active shooter situations. The situation is still developing.
