Idaho Murders Suspect Arrested in Pennsylvania, Report Says

A suspect is in custody in the high-profile murders of four University of Idaho students who were found dead in their off-campus home in November 2022, according to 6ABC. He has been identified by the news station as Bryan Christopher Kohberger.

NBC Philadelphia first broke the story of the suspect’s arrest, which occurred in Pennsylvania near the Pocono Mountains.

A Moscow police press conference will be live streamed here at 1 p.m. PT. In that press conference, Moscow, Idaho, Police Chief James Fry confirmed an arrest was made in the quadruple homicide.

Bill Thompson, Latah County’s lead prosecutor, said in the news conference that Kohberger was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary. He said the probable cause affidavit with additional details will be sealed until Kohberger is fully extradited back to Idaho.

Kohberger, who is held with no bond, has an apartment in Pullman, Thompson said in the news conference, adding that his next court date will be Tuesday, and he is being represented by a public defender.

According to court records in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, the suspect was arrested December 30, 2022, by the Pennsylvania State Police. According to 6ABC, the FBI assisted in the arrest. Kohberger is facing murder charges in Idaho, the news station reports. He was identified as a person of interest and tracked to Pennsylvania, where he is originally from, according to court records.

Court records show Kohberger appeared in court after his arrest on December 30. He is facing extradition to Idaho, according to the court records. He is being held at the Monroe County Prison, records show. Bail was denied, according to the court records. It was not immediately clear if he has hired an attorney.

The Moscow Police Department announced a press conference would be held at 1 p.m. local time, 4 p.m. Eastern, in Idaho to reveal new information. Prosecutors and police in Moscow have not provided any details about the arrest. Court records show that Kohberger is originally from Albrightsville, Pennsylvania. Kohberger is a graduate student at Washington State University, pursuing his Ph.D. in criminal justice and criminology, according to the university’s website.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the man is in custody in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

His arrest was also confirmed by other news outlets. “A law enforcement official confirmed the arrest to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation ahead of a formal announcement expected later Friday,” the AP wrote.


Moscow, Idaho, Police Announced They Are Holding a Press Conference on December 30, 2022

In a press release posted to their Facebook page, Moscow police announced that they will be holding a 1 p.m. press conference on Friday, December 30, 2022, in the City Council Chambers at 206 E. 3rd Street of Moscow City Hall.

Police Chief James Fry “will give an update of the ongoing investigation into the quadruple homicide that occurred at 1122 King Road on Sunday, November 13,” the press release says. “Officials from the Moscow Police Department, Idaho State Police, the City of Moscow, and University of Idaho will be present.”

The police statement did not address NBC Philadelphia’s story about a suspect arrest, but it said, “Please hold all media inquiries until after the news conference.”
