Indiana vs Notre Dame Basketball 2021 Preview

The Hoosiers are coming off an 81-49 win over Merrimack on December 12. Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis led all scorers with 16 points, and he also hauled in nine rebounds. Forward Race Thompson added 14 points, and Jordan Geronimo tallied a double-double, netting 13 points and 13 boards in the dominant win.

“We’re learning how to win,” Indiana head coach Mike Woodson said after the game. “When you start trying to build a team and you put different pieces in place, you don’t know how long it’s going to take. And even though we’ve lost two games, those two games were winnable games.”

Jackson-Davis leads the Hoosiers in scoring, netting 19.3 points a game, while Thompson is the team’s leading rebounder, grabbing 8.7 boards per contest. Indiana is averaging 78.3 points a game on offense, and it’s shooting 48.6% from the field on the season.

“We’re still a work in progress,” Woodson added. “We’re still learning each other as players, me being the coach and the staff that I have around me. We just got to continue to work.”

On the other side, Notre Dame is coming off a big upset win over No. 21 Kentucky on December 11. Blake Wesley nailed a 15-foot jumper with 11.7 seconds left in the game for the go-ahead basket, and he was one of four Wildcats scoring in double figures.

“That’s kind of like storybook, right?” Fighting Irish head coach Mike Brey said. “South Bend guy goes to 15 feet and knocks it down.”

“He’s a puppy compared to some of the guys he’s playing against,” Brey added about Wesley. “But there’s something about him. There’s a special uniqueness about him. He’s allowed us to really coach him and coach him hard. I’ve been hard on him… I think his body language and maturity was better tonight. He ran our team.”

Wesley had help. Guard Dane Goodwin also had 14 points, Trey Wertz added 12 and Paul Atkinson chipped in 10 in the upset victory.

Goodwin leads the Irish with 14.3 points, and Nate Laszewski is the team’s leading rebounder, hauling in 8.4 rebounds per contest.

Indiana is 51-22 in the all-time series against Notre Dame.
