Jets vs Panthers Preview
The Jets gave up on Sam Darnold this offseason, sending the former No. 3 overall pick to the Panthers and drafting BYU QB Zach Wilson. Now Darnold gets a chance to prove to the Jets that they made the wrong choice, although he’s downplaying the storyline.
“My job is to go out there and play good football, and that’s all I’m thinking about,” Darnold told reporters.
Wilson had a similar sentiment about the matchup.
“That’s definitely not something I think about,” Wilson said. “He’s doing his own thing now, he’s got a great situation going for him. I think the organization already decided to go one way, and it’s not because Sam’s not a good football player, it’s just they wanted a fresh start. So, I’m happy for him and it’s a new situation for me. That’s not even something that crosses my mind. It’s just how can I continually get better every single day, prepare to do the right things on Sunday. How can I help our team win football games?”
The game also marks the debut of new Jets coach Robert Saleh, who was one of the most highly-touted coaching prospects out there after his time with the 49ers as a defensive guru. He’ll look to turn things around for a Jets team that went 2-14 last season.
“All gas, no brakes. Exactly like he said when he came here,” LB C.J. Mosley said. “He told us when we come to practice, when we come to work, everything is going to be fast and efficient. He hasn’t demanded anything less on players and coaches or anyone in the Jets building.”
The Panthers finished 5-11 last year in Matt Ruhle’s first season. If they want to start this season out on the right foot, they’ll have to slow down Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
“Going back and watching him on tape—just explosive, dynamic, tremendous speed, sideline-to-sideline, plays with great length, has a vast array of pass-rush moves,” Rhule said. “They’ve got a tremendously strong defensive line. So I do think that’ll be one of the keys.”
When it comes to projected win totals, there’s not a tremendous amount expected out of either squad. The Jets sit at six — ahead of only the Texans and Lions — while Carolina comes in at 7.5.
Carolina is a 4-point favorite for the matchup, with the total set at 45 points.
