Michigan vs Indiana Basketball 2022 Preview

Indiana looks to win its third-straight Big Ten contest after bouncing back form an 83-74 loss at Iowa on Jan. 13. The Hoosiers beat Nebraska 78-71 on Jan. 71 and No. 4 Purdue 68-65 on Jan. 20.

Rob Phinisee buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 16.9 seconds left against Purdue for the win. It later led to a viral photo of Phinisee amid a sea of Hoosiers fans, taken by an Indiana student athletics staff photographer, which the IndyStar highlighted on Jan. 21.

“At that moment, I was just shooting,” Indiana photographer Gracie Farrall said according to the IndyStar. “There was no time for looking at my the back of my screen — it was just finger down, get what I can and make sure it’s in focus.”

Indiana will look to refocus after a picture-perfect ending to face a Michigan team that comes into Sunday’s game looking to build momentum.

“It’s only one win as well, so we’ve got plenty more to go,” Hoosiers guard Xavier Johnson said according to Field Level Media.

The Wolverines have a shot at their first winning streak first time since early December. Michigan beat Maryland 83-64 on Jan. 18, which ended a three-game losing streak.

Things haven’t been pretty for a Wolverines program that went to the Final Four three years ago and the Elite Eight in 2021. The Wolverines fell to North Carolina, Seton Hall,, Arizona, and Central Florida in non-conference action. Minnesota, Rutgers, and No. 25 Illinois then beat the Wolverines in conference play.

Hunter Dickinson returning to the lineup boosted the Wolverines against Maryland. The NBA Draft prospect dropped 21 points, six rebounds, and six assists against the Terrapins.

“It was great to have him back healthy on the floor,” Michigan head coach Juwan Howard said per Field Level Media. “His presence out there just makes his teammates better. He’s gonna get doubled. He’s been able to make plays for others when he gets doubled.”

Dickinson leads the Wolverines with 16.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. The Wolverines also get good production from Eli Brooks, who averages 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per contest.

Trayce Jackson-Davis averages a team-high 18.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. Race Thompson scores 10.8 points per game, and he averages 7.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per night. Xavier Johnson also averages double figures with 10 points per game, and he posts 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest.
