The first victim named in the Robb Elementary School mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, is a fourth grade teacher.

Her name is Eva Mireles, according to ABC News. Heavy is committed to running a photo and bio of every victim as they are named. The death toll rose throughout the night to 19 children and two teachers. The gunman, identified by Texas Governor Greg Abbott as Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot and killed by law enforcement at the scene.

Then came the names of the children. All were in the same classroom, The Associated Press reported. Many of the students had been with their parents and family members earlier in the day for an end-of-the-year awards ceremony, where they received certificates for being honors students and other accomplishments. The last day of school was scheduled for Thursday, May 26.

The police response is causing controversy; the father of one murder victim said parents even considered rushing in themselves. You can read a detailed minute-by-minute timeline on the mass shooting, including 911 calls and police response, here.

Uziyah Garcia, 10, was named by family members to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. Xavier Lopez, also 10, was a fourth-grader and another of the deceased victims, according to a KSAT-TV anchor. Ellie Garcia, 10, was confirmed as a victim by her parents.

Another victim, fourth-grader Amerie Jo Garza, 10, described as a “teacher’s pet” by her grandmother, was shot and killed while trying to call 911, Daily Beast reported.

“My Grand Daughter was shot and killed for trying to call 911, she died a Hero trying to get help for her and her fellow classmates,” Garza’s grandmother told the publication.

A family member named Irma Garcia as the other adult killed. She also was a fourth-grade teacher, who co-taught with Mireles. She was a former teacher of the year:

The motive is not clear, but the mass murder has provoked heated debate throughout the country about gun control and other issues.

A border patrol agent, who has not been named, is among the wounded. Officials said he shot and killed the suspect. The exact number of those injured is not yet clear.

The gunman also is believed to have shot his grandmother, Abbott said. The state senator said on CNN that the grandmother is clinging to life.
