Oakland School Shooting Leaves Six Injured in Active Shooter Incident

At least one active shooter opened fire at a school in Oakland, California, wounding six people shot, although none has died, police said in a news conference.

The reports first broke out around 2 p.m. on the west coast on September 28, 2022.

KPIX-TV reported that the shooting occurred “at a high school campus in Oakland.” The shooting occurred “at facilities shared by Rudsdale Newcomer and Bay Area Technology School (BayTech) at 8210 Fontaine St. in the city’s Oak Knoll/Golf Links neighborhood,” the television statiom reported. Initial reports were of a shooting at Sojourner Truth High School, but that’s a virtual school.

According to a tweet from journalist Katie Nielsen, “new information about the location of the school shooting: It happened at Rudsdale Continuation & Newcomer High Schools. It’s one of 3 schools on the King Estate Campus – including BayTech Charter, Sojourner Truth Independent Study (home of OUSDs online learning program).”

She added, “Witnesses tell investigators a car with 3 gunman pulled up, got out, opened fire, & left.” But authorities have not confirmed the information about multiple gunmen.

Victims were found inside the school, police confirmed in a news conference. They were all over age 18. Their affiliation with the school is not clear.

The suspect or suspects are not named or in custody. The motive is not clear.

Police Called the School Shooting a “Heinous Act’

Just after 12:45 p.m. in the afternoon, police received a report of a shooting at a school, Oakland Police Assistant Chief Darren Allison at a news conference. That is a building that houses four different schools on campus. When officers arrived on scene, and immediately made entry into the school, looking for any suspects and victims.

The shooting occurred in the threshold of the campus. “We believe the victims were affiliated with the school,” Allison said. He was not more specific.

In all six adults ages 18 and over who have some affiliation with the school were determined to be suffering from gunshot wounds, he said. Two individuals had life-threatening injuries. One was released. Two were pending release. The remainder had non life-threatening injuries.

Police are actively looking for one shooter although others might be involved. The chief called it a “heinous act.” The motive is not yet clear.

The chief called it a dangerous and “volatile” situation and recognized the “bravery” of law enforcement officers who responded and entered the school.


Police Confirmed They Are Investigating a Shooting That May Involve Multiple Suspects

Police tweeted, “The Oakland Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street. We are asking our Community Members to please avoid the area at this time. PIO is on the way to scene. Media we will update with staging area.”

Journalist Katie Nielsen tweeted, “UPDATE – 3 patients taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, 2 taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.”

She noted: “Possibly 3 shooters involved. Law enforcement on scene do not believe the suspect/s are still at the school. Media representatives from OPD and OUSD are on the way to the scene to provide more info.”
