USA vs Canada Semifinal Preview

Team USA, who took Group B with 18 points across seven contests, dominated Slovakia 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

American forwards Colin Blackwell and Conor Garland scored 2 goals apiece, and defenseman Christian Wolanin and forwards Trevor Moore and Kevin Labanc each added a pair of assists.

Garland has amassed 10 points in the tournament (5 goals, 5 assists); only two players have more.

“I’m just happy for the guys,” head coach Jack Capuano said, according to the official USA Hockey website. “We’re facing some adversity here with injuries, and to see that pull the group even closer, I couldn’t be prouder of them. We’ll see how tonight’s games shake out before knowing our next opponent, but our group is excited to know we have a chance to play for a medal and make some history.”

Team USA goaltender Cal Petersen made 27 stops in the victory. Among qualified netminders, he leads the tournament in save percentage (96.06 percent) and goals-against average (1.01).

“It’s about sacrifice. A lot of guys blocking shots, especially there at the end,” Petersen said, according to the official IIHF website. “You saw we had a comfortable lead and guys were still sacrificing their bodies. And that’s what this is about. That’s how you win hockey games. It’s just a testament to the character we have in the room and it’s going to take us a long way.”

Canada barely snuck into the playoff round, claiming Group B’s fourth and final spot on the strength of a head-to-head tiebreaker with Kazakhstan. Both teams accrued 10 points.

The Canadians then stunned Group A winners Russia 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals. Just over two minutes into the extra period, Canadian defenseman Troy Stecher carried the puck deep into the Russian zone with some slick handling, then slipped a pass across the mouth of the net to forward Andrew Mangiapane, who did the rest.

Defenseman Connor Brown helped on Canada’s first goal, an Adam Henrique equalizer in the third period, to push his tournament-leading assist tally to 9; his 11 points are tied for the worlds lead.

Team USA thumped Canada 5-1 in the sides’ group-play meeting back on May 23. Moore scored twice, and defenseman Adam Clendening and forward Jason Robertson each notched a goal and an assist.

“It’s going to be a fun game,” Canadian goaltender Darcy Kuemper said of Saturday’s test, per the IIHF site. “It’s a good rivalry, and there’s going to be a lot on the line. We’re playing a lot better hockey now, so we’re going to go out and play our game and have some fun.”
