Brazil, United States, Australia and Nigeria have already qualified for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics basketball tournament. In a little less than two weeks, we’ll be able to add two countries to that list.
That’s because the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship is serving as an Olympics qualifying tournament. The top-two finishing teams (not counting Brazil) will book a spot in Rio, while the next three countries will get another shot at qualification during a tournament in July.
Canada is the team to watch here. Jay Triano’s squad is young, but with Andrew Wiggins, Nik Stauskas, Anthony Bennett, Andrew Nicholson and other NBA players, the Canadians have an extremely good shot at winning their first FIBA Americas title.
Coverage of the tournament will be provided by TSN, but if you can’t get to a TV or don’t have that channel, there’s good news. Every game of the this tournament, from the opener between Cuba and Venezuela, to the championship on September 12, will be free to watch online.
