The Sprint Cup Series drivers were back on the track Friday for the Pure Michigan 400 Coors Light pole qualifying.
And when the three rounds were over, it was Joey Logano who was the fastest on the 2-mile D-shaped oval to take the pole and No. 1 position for Sunday’s race. He completed the lap in 35.697 seconds.
It’s Logano’s third pole at Michigan and 17th of his career. The 26-year-old won the FireKeepers Casino 400 at MIS earlier this season.
Jimmie Johnson will start in Row 1 with Logano (35.728) and Denny Hamlin was third-fastest at 35.747 seconds.
Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott round out the top 5. And Alex Bowman, who is filling in for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Sunday, will start sixth.
The race, the second at Michigan International Speedway this year, is scheduled for Sunday with an approximate green flag time of 2:18 p.m. Eastern. It will be televised by NBCSN.
Martin Truex Jr. was the fastest in practice among all drivers prior to the start of Friday night’s qualifying. Truex Jr. covered the track at 201.545 miles per hour. Truex, though, didn’t crack the final 12 after Round 2. He’ll start 14th Sunday.
