American golfer Brian Harman has surprised many with his performance at the 2017 U.S. Open, as he sits atop the leaderboard at 12-under par heading into the final round of play. The 30-year-old golfer has a sweet lefty stroke and is one of the few left-handed golfers on the PGA Tour.
Harman was born in Savannah, Georgia and turned pro back in 2009. He has a career earnings of $10,085,165, according to his Yahoo! Sports profile. Harman has won two PGA Tour events, including the Wells Fargo Championship in 2017. Before the 2017 U.S. Open, Harman’s best finish at a major came back in 2014 when he finished T26 at The Open Championship.
Brian Harman can be found on Twitter @harmanbrian. He also has his own website official website as well. Let’s take a look at Harman’s family.
1. Harman’s Wife, Kelly Van Slyke Is a Radiation Therapist
Van Slyke works as a radiation therapist at the UC San Diego Radiation Oncology Center. According to FabWags, she graduated from SUNY Genesco in 2007, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. She’s obviously a big fan of her husband, as her Twitter bio currently reads as being the “President of the Brian Harman Fan Club.”
The two were married in 2014 near their home in St. Simons Island, Georgia. According to her Facebook account, she does pilates often and previously worked as pilates instructor as well. The two had their first and currently only child on June 8, 2016.
2. They Have a One-Year-Old Daughter Named Cooper Marie
As mentioned, Harman and Kelly had a daughter on June 8 of 2016. Kelly posted the news on Instagram stating “Beyond grateful. #coopermarieharman #Ilovebrianharman A special thank you to @cdflexer for being such an amazing nurse and friend to Brian, Cooper and I. We love you!”
You can find a short gallery of photos of their daughter on Zimbio, complete with Cooper spending time with her mom and dad on the golf course.
3. Brian’s Father, Eric Harman, Isn’t a Golf Fan
Before Brian’s Master’s debut back in 2015, the excitement was swirling around his family. So much so, that his father and mother, Eric and Nancy Harman, decided to attend the tournament for the first time. According to the Savannah Morning News, Brian’s father admitted that he wouldn’t be going to the event if his son wasn’t playing in it.
“I would not go if Brian wasn’t playing,” said Eric Harman, a Savannah native. “I’m honestly not a huge fan of golf.”
Obviously, he enjoys watching his son play, and the two have both been to plenty of events, but just never The Masters. With his recent play, though, there’s no question that his family has enjoyed his impressive run at the 2017 U.S. Open.
4. Eric Harman Owns His Own Dental Practice
While Brian has had success on the PGA Tour, his father has built his own brand. He’s a DMD, or Doctor of Medical Dentistry, and owns his own practice. According to Golf Digest, Eric also was a valedictorian in high school. While Eric owns his own dental practice and is certainly skilled in that, his son admitted to Golf.com that his father isn’t exactly the best golfer.
The father is not good at golf. I know this because Brian Harman told me that and I don’t think he would misrepresent his father’s golf game.
Apparently, the golfing gene didn’t bless Eric.
5. Brian’s Mother, Nancy Harman, Is a Chemist
As Golf Digest pointed out, Nancy is not only a chemist but apparently, her and her son have quite a bit in common. They said that Brian is more like his mother, as he’s “brilliant, thorough, stubborn, tough and very detail-oriented.”
Nancy also seems to lock in on Brian’s career as a golfer and spoke with WSAV.com about how nervous she was ahead of his first PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic back in 2014. Apparently, she was “nervous” on his final hole, but he only needed to three-putt once he hit the green to win, so she was “confident” once it came down to that.
Overall, Brian Harman seems to have a family that’s dedicated to his craft, while also building their own incredibly impressive careers as well.
