De’Aaron Fox’s Family: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

(Getty)

After just one standout season at the University of Kentucky, De’Aaron Fox is heading to the NBA and was among the top picks in the 2017 NBA Draft. The Sacramento Kings picked him with the fifth overall pick. The 19-year-old point guard is the son of Aaron and Lorainne. He also has an older brother named Quentin.

During his one season at Kentucky, he averaged 16.7 points per game, had a .478 field goal percentage and averaged 3.9 rebounds per game in his 36 games. He started all but two of the games he played in. He was a member of the first-team All-SEC for 2017, won the SEC Tournament MVP and was picked for the SEC All-Freshman Team.

You can follow Fox on Instagram and Twitter.

Here’s a look at Fox’s family.

1. His Dad Aaron Fox Played College Football at Fort Hays State

Fox’s father, Aaron Fox, played college football at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

Emmanuel Olatunbosun, Fox’s high school basketball coach at Cypress Lakes High School in Katy, Texas, told Philly.com that Fox’s father “was a bonafide athlete” who would push his son to be the greatest athlete he could be. He always wanted his son to learn that scoring the most points on the court alone didn’t make him a great player.

“I remember vividly a game where he scored 50 points, and I walked over like, ‘Man, he did that. He brought us back,'” Olatunbosum told Philly.com. “[Aaron Fox] was like, ‘No. No.’ He was upset, and he just scored 50! We got back to the school and get off the bus, and De’Aaron is in there shooting free throws.”

In an interview with Bleacher Report, Aaron Fox said he knew his son was wise when he was seven years old and wanted to call football plays.

2. Fox’s Mom Played Basketball at Arkansas-Little Rock in the 1980s

Fox’s mother, Lorraine Harris-Fox, is on Twitter. She’s a former college basketball player herself, playing at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock from 1986 to 1988. She still holds the school record for the highest free-throw percentage at .928.

“She knows what she’s talking about,” Fox told the Associated Press at the NBA Combine in May. “The one thing she stays on me is free-throw shooting. If there’s anything she criticizes me about, it’s shooting free throws.”

According to her Facebook page, the Fox family now lives in Houston. She’s originally from Shuqualak, Mississippi.

3. He Has a 24-Year-Old Brother Named Quentin

As USA Today notes, Fox has an older brother, Quentin. He’s 24 years old and is also a good athlete himself. In an Bleacher Report profile, Lorraine said the brthoers both started playing basketball when they were toddlers.

She recalled a time when Fox was just two years old, and he thought orange Halloween buckets were basketballs.

“It was just hilarious,” Lorraine told Bleacher Report. “It was like, ‘OK, son, that’s not a basketball.'”

4. Fox’s Parents Met at a Junior College in Mississippi

Fox’s parents met at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, Mississippi, reports Bleacher Report. After they completed their courses there, they went their separate ways. Aaron Fox went to Kansas to play football at Fort Hays and Lorraine went to Arkansas to play basketball.

In a 2016 interview with USA Today, Fox admitted that his mother has helped him a great deal with free throws, her specialty in college.

“She always told me to make my free throws,” Fox told USA Today. “I know when she played they didn’t have a 3-point line, so she had a good mid-range game. They pressed, and she was always on top of the press and active. She always tells me to play with energy.”

In that same interview, Fox also said he had a Plan B: go into accounting. Since he’s good at math, he took courses specifically to help him figure out his finances. He also took communication courses because his parents really want him to make sure he’s set off the court too.

“It is important to me and my parents. It’s something I want to finish, even if I go to the NBA and play 20 years. I want to get a degree,” Fox told USA Today.

5. Fox’s Dad Has no Time for Lonzo Ball’s Father’s Talk: ‘His Son Got Outplayed Twice’

Fox and Kentucky played Lonzo Ball and UCLA twice during the college basketball season, including in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. Fox had 20 points in that game, while Ball had 14 points and six turnovers. Ball’s father, LaVar Ball, who’s never seen a microphone not worth talking to, then told ESPN that he didn’t think Fox was a Top-5 pick.

Aaron Fox is not quite as outspoken as LaVar Ball, but he wasn’t going to take that lying down.

“My son already ate his ass up twice,” Aaron Fox told Bleacher Report. “[LaVar] can say what he wants to say. I just tell him to go back and watch the film. That’s it. All that yap, yap, yapping, I don’t even got to respond to that. We played them twice. Twice his son got outplayed. I always tell [De’Aaron], let your game speak for it. You ain’t got to talk. You ain’t got to fuss.”

Fox also told Bleacher Report that he doesn’t want his dad speaking for him. “I’ll do it myself.”
