Miranda Elish is the University of Texas pitcher who formerly pitched for the University of Oregon Ducks. On May 24, Elish was involved in a bizarre incident when she was knocked out during a game against Alabama following a throw from her own catcher.
In the wake of the injury, the University of Texas official softball Twitter account tweeted that Elish is “doing well” and was taken to the emergency room as a precaution.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Elish’s Injury Game the Day After One of Her Worst Performances for University of Texas
In the Longhorns 3-0 loss the night before Elish’s accident, Fast Pitch News described her “key mistakes” as playing a role in her team’s defeat. The Daily Texan in their report said that Elish had suffered her “worst performance of the postseason.” Elish told the newspaper, “She capitalized on one of my mistakes. I threw a pitch right down the middle and she drove it. I could have done better and should have done better.” The same report mentions that the TSU catcher Mary Iakopo had thrown multiple errant balls.
2. Elish Maintains an Instagram Account for Her Dogs
In her Twitter bio, Elish quotes a Bible verse, Isaiah 43:2, which reads, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.” Elish also has the quote tattooed on her forearm. Elish maintains an Instagram account for her dogs, Nala and Mo.
3. Elish Has Said She Wanted to Help Special Needs Children After Graduation
Elish told the Chicago Tribune in 2015 that her plans after graduation would likely include coaching softball in some capacity. However, Elish added, “That’s what my career plans are, but if that were to fail, I would probably do something with special needs kids. I think it would be cool to maybe start a foundation to help them. It’s something I really enjoy. I love helping kids that love to be helped.”

4. Elish ‘Wants to Win More Than Anyone’
Elish attended Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Indiana. During her time in her hometown, Elish was ranked the No. 1 recruit in the nation by FloSoftball.com and was a three-time Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, according to her University of Oregon profile. In high school, Elish was a dual sports star, playing for the school’s basketball team before quitting in May 2013 to concentrate on softball. Elish’s club team in Indiana was the Beverly Bandits.
Her coach with the Bandits was Jennifer Tyrrell, who said of Elish, “Miranda is a winner. She wants to win more than anyone, and her grit mixed with talent is the right combination for success. You want Miranda with you if you want to win.” In turn, Elish is quoted in the same article as saying that Tyrrell is “more than a coach — more like a mentor and friend.” While Tyrrell went on to say that she knew she would see Elish playing in the Women’s World Series one day.
5. Elish Signed With the University of Texas in October 2018
In October 2018, ESPN U reported that Elish, along with coach Mike White and teammate Lauren Burke had signed with the University of Texas.
