After clinching the No. 2 seed in the playoffs on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will enjoy a bye week before hosting an AFC Divisional Round game at Arrowhead Stadium. During that week off, one of the team’s brightest minds, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is again expected to interview for an open head coaching position.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the job opening is with the Carolina Panthers who have requested permission to speak to Andy Reid’s top offensive assistant.

ESPN Insider Adam Schefter is also now reporting that a second NFC team, the New York Giants, have requested permission to interview Bieniemy for their vacant head coaching position. The Giants parted ways with former head coach Pat Shurmur early Monday morning. The team is now in its third head coaching search in the past five seasons.
Andy Reid Endorsed Bieniemy Earlier This Season
Last offseason, the 50-year-old Bieniemy interviewed for heading coaching jobs with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets. He was ultimately passed up by other candidates in all four locations.
Earlier this season, Reid gave his second-year offensive coordinator a ringing endorsement when a reporter asked what he would say to an NFL owner who reached out about hiring Bieniemy as their next head coach.
“I’d say hire him, like right now,” said Reid. “That’s what I’d tell you. I don’t want to lose him, but if you’re asking me if he’s ready to be a head coach? Yeah, he’s ready. He was ready last year. Nobody is in more control than what he is within this game. He is a leader of men. He knows football, but he knows the offense like the back of his hand. He is in the quarterback room every day. I think if you talked to Patrick, I think Patrick would tell you how much of an influence he has had on him.”
