At the 3:45 mark of the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans game on Friday night, LeBron James threw an alley-oop to Anthony Davis, and he finished it over former Laker Brandon Ingram. Going into the commercial break, former Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson uttered the words, ‘Brandon Ingram: You got Mossed.’
“LeBron James playing like a quarterback… Brandon Ingram, you got Mossed,” said Jackson.
Of course, Jackson is referencing ESPN’s Monday Night Football segment ‘You Got Mossed,’ featuring Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss. It’s a phrase that Moss coined during his Hall of Fame career by catching deep balls over shorter defenders. Moss himself had a 33-inch vertical to go along with his 6’4 frame, allowing him to leap over the majority of NFL defenders lined up across from him. He also ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds.
“In practice, we would sit up there and see who we could Moss, and we say who we could Moss is catching a deep route and jumping over the defensive back. Once you have accomplished that, then you are considered to be ‘Mossed,’ said former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne.
Anthony Davis on Tracking Down Alley-Oops From Teammates
According to the Los Angeles Times reporter Tania Ganguli, Anthony Davis told his teammates if they throw it towards the rim, he’ll do his best to find a way to finish it.
“I just see the ball, and I just try to go get it,” Davis said. “I told my teammates at the beginning of the year if you throw it towards the rim, I’ll find a way to get it.”
There were numerous alley-oop attempts on Friday night against the Pelicans where Davis had to bail his teammates out for a couple bad passes in his direction but was able to turn them into spectacular plays.
Immediately after the game during an interview with ESPN’s Jorge Sedano, Davis shared what it was like being in the zone scoring 40 points in three quarters.
“It felt good. I mean, the ball was going in for me. My teammates did a good job putting me in position to score the ball, and I just try to take my time to make sure anytime I shot it, it was going in,” said Davis.
Lakers coach Frank Vogel thought his team played well against the Pelicans, specifically putting together a better performance than the last meeting, per the Los Angeles Times.
“I thought we played a better basketball game this time around. … Even when they were making runs I felt like we were in control.”
