Haason Reddick to Hold out From Jets Camp, Massive Fines Coming: Report

Haason Reddick has made his stance quite clear.

Adam Schefter of ESPN shared on social media that Reddick isn’t planning to report with the rest of his New York Jets teammates on Tuesday, July 23 because of a contract dispute.

Reddick is in the last year of his contract and is set to make $14.25 million in 2024. The Jets traded for the veteran pass rusher in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason.

Gang Green got Reddick in exchange for a conditional 2026 third-round draft choice. If Reddick appeared in at least 67.5% of the snaps and recorded a double-digit sack campaign in 2024 that third-rounder would become a second-rounder.

Reddick Is Getting Aggressive With His Decision

By choosing to hold out, Reddick is set to incur some massive fines.

Each training camp day that he skips, Reddick will be fined $50,000, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. Reddick already gave up over $300,000 of his own money from skipping the Jets’ OTAs and mandatory minicamp earlier this offseason.

With Reddick digging in his heels this will escalate the situation for the Jets ahead of training camp.

New York can play hardball and force him to play on the last year of his deal. Or they can try to smooth things over by altering his contract or just outright giving him a brand new multiyear contract extension.

Leverage Staredown Between Reddick and the Jets

New York holds the ultimate power in a lot of respects.

Reddick is under contract. For every training camp day that Reddick doesn’t show up he can be fined a non-waivable $50,000. No matter what happens he won’t get that money back, the Jets can’t waive it and give it back.

However, Reddick has the power depending on how far he is willing to push things with his holdout. He knows that the Jets need him.

A massive change in leverage occurred this offseason which might have changed Reddick’s mind.

New York let Bryce Huff walk in free agency and they traded away veteran defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers. Suddenly the Jets were without the same level of depth that they had previously on the defensive line.

New York wants to win the Super Bowl this year. Reddick is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. If the Jets want to win a championship, they are going to need Reddick to accomplish that feat.

“The issue: Reddick did, in fact, still want a new contract. After he was acquired, the Jets were under the impression that Reddick would still report for offseason workouts and minicamp — and they made it clear they did not intend to sign him to an extension right away, though they were amenable at some point to a restructure of his contract,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic explained.

Now it’s an awkward staring contest. Both sides need each other, but Reddick wants more money and the Jets want to win.

Rosenblatt said the “most likely outcome” is “some sort of restructure.”

The Jets could guarantee a portion of his contract and/or add some performance incentives that would allow him to make additional money.

“Of course, Reddick would have to be agreeable to that sort of compromise,” Rosenblatt added.
