Conor McGregor Randomly ‘Challenged’ By UFC Star: ‘I Need to Fight Him’

Former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor was called out by jokester and No. 4 ranked heavyweight Derrick Lewis earlier this week.

“The Black Beast” was set to take on No. 2 ranked heavyweight Curtis Blaydes in the main event of UFC Vegas 15 on November 28. However, Blaydes tested positive for COVID-19 and the fight has been postponed.

During the virtual media day on Wednesday, Lewis was asked if he would callout a fighter should he defeat Blaydes on Saturday night.

“I think there’s one guy that’s been talking trash for years that I wanna fight,” Lewis said via BJPenn.com. “Conor McGregor. He been calling me out – every interview he been calling me out, so I need to fight him next!”

Of course, Lewis is kidding. The Black Beast weighs around 100 pounds more than McGregor and is the owner of the UFC record for most knockouts in heavyweight history, 11.

McGregor, who is ranked No. 4 at lightweight, is scheduled to compete against No. 2 ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier on January 23 in the main event of UFC 257.

Lewis Is One of the Most Devastating Forces in the UFC

All in all, Lewis has finished 19 bouts by either KO or TKO. He has crushing power in both fists and, as of late, The Black Beast has shown off his powerful head kicks and flying knees.

In an interview with Heavy, Lewis explained why he holds the record for most knockouts in UFC heavyweight history.

“I’m just different,” he said. “I do everything differently than everyone else. I’m not really all that technical like everyone else is. So, I’m out there really trying to kill or be killed every fight. A lot of guys out there like to play safe and just hold you and take you down and try and place safe, win by decision or something like that. Me, I’m going out there on my shield every fight.”

McGregor Will Make His Anticipated Return on January 23, 2021

“Notorious” is undoubtedly the biggest star in MMA and fans will finally see him back inside the Octagon for the main event of UFC 257 on January 23, 2021.

UFC 257 will mark McGregor’s second bout since losing his lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.

Notorious made his return to the UFC earlier this year when he defeated Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246 in January.

His bout with Poirier in January 2021 is a massive fight in the lightweight division. As both fighters are ranked in the top five of the division, the winner could be next in line for a title shot. And if Nurmagomedov, who is the lightweight champion and announced his retirement in October, decides to vacate his belt before Poirier vs. McGregor, the stakes could possibly be even higher.

Should Nurmagomedov drop the belt, the UFC may feel inclined to put the title up for grabs at UFC 257 and Poirier or McGregor could become the next champion.
