UFC’s Georges St-Pierre Next Move: ‘No Regrets’

Former UFC middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre got fans’ attention on Tuesday when he posted a cryptic message on his social media.

“GSP” took to Instagram to share a Story of himself working on his standup in a cage alongside his longtime coach, Firas Zahabi. St-Pierre, who retired after winning the middleweight championship in 2017, teased that there is a big announcement coming Wednesday.

“New year, new Team, announcement tomorrow,” GSP wrote. Social media was buzzing in anticipation of his announcement and you can see the post below:

The former two-division champ has made it clear that the only fight that interests him enough to warrant a comeback is to faceoff against lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov, who has also shown interest in the bout, announced his retirement from the sport in October, however the Russian is meeting with UFC president Dana White in January to discuss his fighting future.

Update, Wednesday Dec. 30: GSP revealed his announcement and, unfortunately for fight fans, it has nothing to do with fighting. The French Canadian is now working with Budweiser to promote the new “Zero” brand. See below:

St-Pierre is regarded by many fight fans and analysts as one of the greatest of all time. He has a professional MMA record of 26-2 and has avenged both of his losses. He is best known for ruling the UFC’s welterweight division for around five years, defending the belt nine times and defeating some of the best talents from multiple generations.

St-Pierre holds notable victories over the like of Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks. After defeating Hendricks and defending his belt for the ninth time, GSP vacated his welterweight strap in November 2013.

Four years later, St-Pierre returned to the Octagon to challenge then-middleweight champion Michael Bisping at 185 pounds. In the main event of UFC 217, GSP submitted Bisping by third-round rear-naked choke and became a two-division champion. He would then vacate the belt shortly after and announce his retirement from the sport.

St-Pierre Has Told the Media Multiple Times He’s Interested in Fighting Nurmagomedov

GSP has accomplished more in MMA than most but he still has the fire to fight another great. Nurmagomedov is also regarded as one of the best ever and St-Pierre has made it clear that he would love to test himself against the Russian.

At 39 years old, GSP has told the media that he is only interested in returning to the cage if he can fight Nurmagomedov. If St-Pierre fought and defeated Nurmagomedov at lightweight while The Eagle was holding the belt, the Canadian would become the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship in three different weight classes.

However, St-Pierre is hesitant to fight Nurmagomedov at 155 pounds, believing that the weight cut would compromise his performance. If the two did decide to meet, the fight would possibly take place at a catchweight of 165 pounds or at welterweight.
