There were reports that a car had rammed into a crowd in Islington, a borough of London in the United Kingdom, but police say it doesn’t appear to be terrorism related.

The Metropolitan police released a statement that said “police were called at approximately 22:55 hrs on Saturday, 25 March to reports of a car in collision with a number of people in Essex Road, N1.”

Officers and London Ambulance Service were at the scene; “initial reports state four people are suffering injuries – their condition awaits,” Met police said.

Police said the car’s occupants fled the scene on foot, and one male was arrested.

“While enquiries into the circumstances continue, this is not being treated as terrorist related,” police said. An eyewitness at the scene wrote on Twitter that the incident looked like reckless driving. He wrote, “I just heard & saw this where I am & saw them chase someone down, looked like reckless driving to me not terror.”

Social media reports said there was “huge police activity” in the area and reported that a car had rammed into at least four pedestrians.

The car ramming incident occurred on March 25. Reports were unfolding. Fears were heightened because the incident comes after London is still reeling from the terrorist attack at the UK Parliament complex, in which dozens of people were run over by a car driven by a suspect who then stabbed a police officer, after being shot to death by another officer. ISIS claimed responsibility for that attack.

In the Islington incident, photos and videos were quickly being disseminated on social media, although few details were known (this story will be updated as more details come in on the incident.)

The motive was not yet clear, and authorities did not say why they did not think the incident was related to terrorism.
