Sony is expected to unveil their Xperia Z3 smartphone at Berlin IFA this fall. The Xperia Z1 (pictured above) first appeared at last year’s IFA. Here’s what you need to know about this gorgeous new phone.

1. Sony Xperia Z3 Is Expected to Be Revealed on September 3

Sony is expected to debut the Xperia Z3 on September 3, during a big IFA preview event. Press events for Berlin IFA start a few days ahead of the public opening for the IFA trade show, which officially starts September 5. Sony is also expected to debut a new camera and a new smartwatch at this year’s IFA.

2. There Will Be a ‘Compact’ Z3, Too

TechRadar reports that the Z3 won’t be alone on launch day. It will also have a companion phone: the Z3 Compact. Here’s how TechRadar thinks these two versions of the Z3 stack up:

“Early leaks have pointed to a slight Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor bump for the full-size Z3, a 1080p display and a 7mm thick chassis, along with an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat.

At this point, the Z3 Compact looks like it may be the winner with a more powerful 2.5GHz quad-core processor, a larger 4.5-inch display, 2GB of RAM and a 20.7-megapixel camera.”

3. Xperia Z3 Is Expected to Be Water-Resistant

The Xperia Z1 and Z2 both boasted IP55/IP58 water-proofing and dust-resistance. It would be nice to see the Z3 take a step up, and match the IP rating of some other flagship phones, such as the IP67 rating of the Samsung Galaxy S5. Better still, Sony could really turn some heads if they could make the Z3 meet IP68 ratings, which would make the phone fully dust-proof and waterproof for prolonged periods under water.

4. The Xperia Z3 Might Launch Through T-Mobile

According to the unofficial T-Mobile blog, the Xperia Z3 is expected to be coming to T-Mobile. However, an earlier report from Softpedia suggested that the Z3 might not be compatible with the frequencies used by T-Mobile’s LTE network.

5. The Xperia Z3 Will Boast ‘Flagship’ Specs

TechnoBuffalo reports that the Z3 will have the flagship level specs you’d expect to see in any company’s top-end phone. It won’t be a huge step up from the Z2, but the body will be redesigned. Here’s the scoop from TechnoBuffalo:

“Recent rumors have suggested that the Xperia Z3 will offer a totally redesigned body that breaks away from some of the industrial design language we’ve seen in earlier Xperia smartphones. That should be enough to off-set some of the hardware, which so far doesn’t look like much of an upgrade from the Xperia Z2. We’re expecting a Snapdragon 801 processor with a slight bump in clock speed, 3GB of RAM and a 20.7-megapixel camera.”
