In a video that has garnered millions of views to date Bill Nye, famous to a whole generation for his popular 90s TV show “Bill Nye The Science Guy”, publicly denounces introducing creationism and the Bible into science classrooms.
In the video Nye describes how the US is a major center for innovation in the world and removing evolution from the classroom not only complicates a person’s world view but damages the development of our children as a whole.
Bill goes on in the video to say, “And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.”
With nearly 190,000 comments to date from both those supporting and fighting against Nye’s views the video has sparked considerable controversy in a number of communities, particularly with Creationists who are pushing to including the Bible as a mandatory supplement in science classes.
The Associated Press reports that Nye has defended his statements as being not an attack on any particular religious views but rather the way children are raised, hoping to encourage continued focus on scientific developments and encouraging critical thought amongst today’s youth rather than cutting it away at a young age.
