Police in Gatineau, Quebec, have identified the victim of Friday’s daycare shooting as Neil Galliou, a 38-year-old French citizen who was planning to return to his home country to share what he learned about childcare.

Robert Charron, a 49-year-old resident of Denholm, Quebec has been identfied as the shooter.

Police are still investigating a possible motive for the shooting, but believe it’s the result of a marital breakdown.

“The assumption that the tragedy can be connected to a context of marital breakdown is maintained. No information for now confirms that it would be a love triangle,” they said.

Sources report Charron went to the daycare to confront his ex-wife, Nathalie Gagnon, who ran the daycare. After shooting Galliou, he reportedly doused his ex in gasoline before shooting himself.

“I’ve known him for 25 years,” Denholm mayor Pierre Nelson Renaud told the Ottawa Sun. “He was a good employee, a good worker. It’s hard to believe what happened. He was always smiling. People are very surprised.”

Police arrived at the daycare at 10:27 a.m. on Friday, where they found Charron already dead and Galliou injured.

The shooting took place at Racines De Vie Montessori, a home-based daycare located at 225 and 229 Rue Gamelin. At the time 48 children under the age of five were in care at 225 Rue Gamelin, and five infants at 229 Rue Gamelin. None of them were harmed.
