Marvel Studios released the first new trailer for the upcoming film, Black Widow, just before midnight PT on November 2. The long awaited preview features Scarlett Johansson in the eponymous role, and the thrilling two-minute trailer is sure to get fans excited for the movie’s release, which is set hit theaters world-wide on May 1, 2020.
In the first-look preview, Natasha Romanoff says, “We have unfinished business. We have to go back to where it all started,” and shows viewers flashbacks to when she first learned to be an assassin in the Red Room, and her reunion with Yelena. The trailer also features the first glimpse of Taskmaster, the infamous villain who can copy and absorb his foe’s fighting skills.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson said of Black Widow, “I did not want it to be an origin story. I did not want it to be an espionage story. I didn’t want it to feel superficial at all. I only wanted to do it if it actually fit where I was with that character.”
“The film talks about a lot of tough stuff. It deals with a lot of trauma and pain,”Johansson revealed. “And so by elevating the genre I mean I hope that it can be both explosive and dynamic and have all that great fun stuff that goes with the genre, but I hope that we can also talk about, you know, self-doubt and insecurity and shame and disappointment and regret and all that stuff too.”
Directed by Cate Shortland, joining Johansson in the MCU’s second ever female-led superhero film is Stranger Things‘ actor David Harbour as Alanovich Shostakov (aka Red Guardian), O-T Fagbenle as Mason, Rachel Weisz as Melina, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (the “little sister” character of Black Widow.)
While speaking with Variety, Pugh said working on Black Widow was “one of the most bizarre, nuts, extravaganza experiences. I think we’ve made something very raw and very painful and very beautiful and I think people are going to be really surprised by the outcome of a big action film having that much heart,” especially “because (Johansson’s) character had such a hard ending [in Endgame].
“It was special learning from her,” Pugh said of Johansson. “And she’s been doing this for like 10 years in those films. For this to be her film was special. And I got to be there and see how she does stunts and lives it, and it’s so her.”
‘Black Widow’ Is Set After ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ But Before ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Black Widow follows Natasha and many of the other Avengers living on the run after having helped Steve and Bucky escape from the airport in Germany. The movie wrapped filming at the end of October 2019.
Johansson told EW at San Diego’s Comic Con over the summer, “Where we find Natasha in her life at this point is very specific. She really is in a dark place where she’s got no one to call and nowhere to go. She’s really grappling with her own self. When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next — that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”
