Fox and Friends, which is a show that President Donald Trump appears to favor, featured an emotional segment on Charlottesville on August 16, in which guests teared up when speaking about Trump and racism.

Abby Huntsman hosted the segment featuring Democratic political analyst Wendy Osego, who brought up the murder of Heather Heyer, saying, she was killed on “U.S. soil by Nazis.”

Gianno Caldwell was listed as the Republican guest, and he revealed that he couldn’t sleep “at all because president Trump, our president is literally betrayed the conscience of our country.” Periodically tearing up and appearing close to crying, Caldwell blistered Trump in a lengthy commentary. He said:

The very moral fabric in which we have made progress when it comes to race relations in America. He has failed us. And it’s very unfortunate that our president would say things like he did in that press conference yesterday when he says there are good people on the side of the Nazis. They weren’t all Nazis and they weren’t all white supremacists. Mr. President, good people don’t pile around with Nazis and white supremacists. Maybe they don’t consider themselves white supremacists and Nazis, certainly they hold those views. This has become very troubling for anyone to come on any network and defend what President Trump did and said at that press conference yesterday is completely lost and the potential to be morally bankrupt. I’m sorry, no I believe that and I’m being very honest as one who has been talking about these issues for a very long time. I’m sorry that this is where we are right now. I hope the president learns a lesson from his press conference on yesterday. It’s disturbing.

For his part, Trump retweeted a person on August 16 who noted that he had condemned bigotry in Charlottesville, and in later statements, specifically, Nazis and white supremacists. The president has been strongly criticized for criticizing bigotry and behavior on “many sides,” a stance he doubled down on in a press conference on August 16. Here’s the post Trump retweeted:

According to his work bio, Caldwell “is Principal at Caldwell Strategic Consulting. This bipartisan firm headquartered in Washington, D.C., focuses on healthcare, financial services, energy, and local government issues. Gianno has held a role on behalf of a member of Congress as well as roles at the federal, state, and local level reflecting over six years of legislative experience and culminating in the recognition of his ability to effectively create legislative strategies and build bipartisan coalitions. Gianno frequently provides analysis and commentary on Fox News Channel, Fox Business Channel, CNN, HLN, BET, TV One as well as various National News networks. He is also a contributor to the Hill Newspaper. His opinions are sought out on a wide variety of topics including domestic policy, the economy and Congress.”

The bio said that he “served as the Director of African American Outreach for the DuPage County Republican party, the largest Republican county organization in Illinois. Additionally, Gianno served on Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign for President as an advance staffer. Gianno is a native Chicagoan and holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Grand Canyon University.”
