The gunman in the horrific Clackamas Town Center shopping mall shooting in Portland, Oregon, has been identified as Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22.
Meanwhile, his victims have been ID’d. Killed were Steven Matthew Forsyth, 45, and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54. Wounded was Kristina Shevchenko, 15.
Here’s what we know about Jacob Tyler Roberts. (Stay tuned for photos and updates.)
1. Police Believe He Had No Connection to the Victims
2. One of his Facebook Page Likes Was “Shooting”
Other than the “Like” of shooting, Roberts’ Facebook page seems to reveal an average 22-year-old. His musical interests include The Beatles and Beastie Boys, TV shows like South Park and Family Guy, as well as movies like Goodfellas. He seemed to be popular with photos showing him out partying. His relationship status has him “in a relationship”, which conflicts with an earlier Oregonian report that described him as single.
3. He Used a Stolen Weapon in the Attack (But Owned a Pistol)
The AR-15 wielded in the shooting was reportedly stolen from an acquaintance of the shooter. During the course of the shooting the gun jammed, something that likely prevented more deaths. A friend who’d known Roberts since childhood said he purchased a pistol in May and was “responsible” with it.
4. He Was Evicted in the Summer
Roberts lived in a Happy Valley apartment within walking distance of the mall where the shooting took place. He was evicted from that apartment this past summer. The Oregonian at one point reported that evicted with him was a woman named Hannah “Shoemake.” The newspaper later removed that name from its article. (See Fact 9 below re: Roberts’ ex-girlfriend, Hannah Patricia Sansburn.)
5. Roberts Currently Had an Address at 7324 SE 84th Avenue in Portland
A warrant was served to the above premises this morning, which is a five-minute drive to the scene of the shooting.
6. He Had Planned to Move to Hawaii But Missed His Plane
A middle-aged man, thought to be Roberts’ roommate, told
7. Roberts’ High School Described Him as a “Polite Young Man”
Roberts, according to his Facebook page, attended Clackmas Community College. Prior to this he attended Milwaukie High School between the years of 2004 and 2007, where an official described him as “an average student with average grades.” He didn’t graduate from Milwaukie but transferred to Oregon City High School for his senior year. Roberts’ Facebook page says that he currently worked in a gyro shop in Portland.
Oregon City High released a statement, calling him a “polite young man”:
This news is very shocking to those who knew Jacob while at OCHS. He was known as a soft spoken and polite young man who was often eager to be helpful. The motive for such a horrific act is likely to remain a mystery to us all.
8. His Driver’s License Was Suspended
Though Roberts had no known criminal history in Oregon, he did receive two speeding tickets in the past year, and his driver’s license was suspended. That included the commercial driver’s license he held.
9. His ex-Girlfriend was Completely Shocked by his Actions
Hannah Patricia Sansburn, 20, who lived with Roberts until last summer, described her ex-boyfriend as someone whose goal was “to always make you laugh.” She told ABC News this evening that “I don’t understand, I was just with him. I just talked to him. I didn’t believe it was him at all. Not one part of me believed it.”
She also questioned whether Roberts’ plan to move to Hawaii was real; he told her he had missed his flight for his “life plan” because he was drunk.
10. He Shouted “I am the shooter!” as He Opened Fire
Roberts had several fully loaded magazines when he entered the Clackamas Town Center mall on Tuesday afternoon wielding an assault rifle. A neighbor told the Oregonian that she had seen Roberts leave his house on Tuesday, carrying a guitar case, as if he was late for something.
He then drove his 1996 Green Volkswagen Jetta to Clackamas Town Center mall. He launched volleys of shots at indiscriminate targets, killing two people and wounding several others. His gun jammed, and shortly after that he took his own life.
