David Schubert, a former Clark County deputy district attorney who once fled to Mexico to avoid jail from a drug conviction, was found dead in his Las Vegas home on Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know.

David Schubert was a former Clark County deputy district attorney who prosecuted several high-profile Las Vegas drug cases. Hollywood celebrities were among the 49-year-old’s prosecutions, including plea deals with Paris Hilton and Bruno Mars, reports the Las Vegas Sun.

2. He Was Found Dead Wednesday Morning


Schubert was found dead Wednesday morning after dispatchers received a call after 8:30 a.m. about a deceased person being found at 8448 Cambrils Ave in Las Vegas, a Metro Police spokesperson said. Property records list Schubert as the owner of the house. A note was found near his body, but it not immediately known what the note said. The cause of Schubert’s death has yet to be determined.

3. Schubert Pleaded Guilty in 2011 to Possessing Cocaine

Just one month after Schubert prosecuted Bruno Mars, he was arrested in 2011 after his car was stopped by police and he was found with $40 worth of cocaine and an unregistered handgun. According to a police report, passenger 43-year-old Raymon Streeter jumped out of Schubert’s car and tried to make a run for it. Streeter was captured and told police that he had been buying cocaine for the prosecutor for six or seven months.

Schubert pleaded guilty in court to felony possession of a controlled substance not for the purpose of sale and was sentenced to 16 to 40 months in prison. District Judge Carolyn Ellsworth suspend his sentence by placing him on three years of probation, including nine months in the Clark County Detention Center.


4. He Fled to Mexico


On September 21, he failed to surrender to authorities to begin his nine months in county jail and instead fled to Mexico. He even and taunte authorities with a photo on Facebook of a deserted beach. In the end, Schubert returned to the United States and turned himself in.

His lawyer and friend, Louis Schneider said Schubert was released from custody April 30 after serving just under five months of his sentence.


5. He Was Upset With What Happened to Him


Schneider said he and Schubert was very upset with what happened to him

“This was a tragedy from the beginning,” Schneider said. “David needed help. He didn’t need to be punished. He was extremely upset (about) what happened to him. He made a mistake.”

Schneider said Schubert’s death was the result of a mistake that cost him so much.

“Dave was severely punished and stripped of his bar license,” Schneider said. “What he really needed was help.”
