Durham College Lockdown Lifted: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

A possible gunman has prompted a lockdown at Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, reports Durham Region. The first call about a possible shooter came at around 12:45 p.m. local time. The lockdown was lifted an hour later.

Here’s what was happened:


1. Nobody Has Been Hurt Yet

We have no reports of injuries or shots fired.


2. There is a Massive Police Response

Police are searching the campus but haven’t found anything yet. There is a tactical unit on campus right now, reports CP24.

A person who lives close to the college tweeted that she saw “armoured vehicles, choppers, cruisers and sirens” close to her house.


3. The Lockdown is Affecting the Entire Area

Other schools around the college are on lockdown. The Durham Region reports that University of Ontario communications officer Bryan Oliver confirmed the lockdown but no further details.


4. The School is Located East of Toronto

The college is located in Oshawa but has campuses in Ontario and Whitby.


5. There Are 30,000 Students at the School

There are 30,000 students, both part and full-time, enrolled at the school. The college offers a wide-variety of programs from art to businesses and science. The college opened for business in September 1967.
