A recording of air traffic control communications captured the moments before and after a Dynamic Airways passenger plane caught fire Thursday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (listen above).
Officials say 14 people were taken to the hospital with injuries, including one person who suffered a serious burn injury. There were 101 people, including passengers and crew, on board the plane when an engine caught fire while it was taxiing. The plane was bound for Caracas, Venezuela.
In audio provided by LiveATC.net to The Associated Press (listen above), the pilot of the other plane, told air traffic controllers, “Hey, uh, Dynamic is, out of the left engine, it looks like it’s leaking a lot of … I don’t know if it’s fuel, it’s fluid leaking out of the live engine.
The Dynamic Airways pilot replied, “We copy. We’ll probably need to go back to the ramp.”
Moments later, the pilot yelled to air traffic control, “Engine’s on fire! Engine’s on fire!”
Fire rescue crews were then called to the runway.
