Could Sen. Chris Murphy be the Democratic party’s vice presidential nominee? After the supporter he garnered after leading the ninth-longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history, it’s looking more and more likely. He was already on the short list for VP according to some sources, and now many people are hoping that he will be the pick.
Here’s what you need to know.
Murphy’s Nearly 15-Hour Filibuster Had Its Own Trending Hashtag on Twitter
If Murphy wasn’t known nationwide before, he certainly is now. Murphy led a nearly 15-hour long filibuster in support of gun control, urging fellow lawmakers to ban people on no-fly lists from buying guns and seeking background checks for all gun purchases. He led a heartfelt filibuster that ended with a gut-wrenching story about a little boy who lost his life in Sandy Hook.
In support, many people began a hashtag trend on Twitter called #HoldtheFloor. The hashtag trended for nearly as long as the filibuster itself. When he finally yielded the floor, supporters changed the hashtag to #HeldtheFloor.
His Name Has Already Been Floated as a Possible VP Pick
Murphy’s name has already been mentioned as list of potential vice president picks for Hillary Clinton, according to a report from USA Today in May. Murphy is only 42 and his youth would be a welcome addition to the ticket. He was the youngest sitting member of the Senate when he joined at the age of 39. When he was only 25, he was elected to the state House.
