Reports streamed in April 18 that Stephens may have killed himself near an elementary school in Erie. State police said that they received a tip from someone who located his white Ford Fusion in the parking lot of a McDonald’s in Erie. Authorities followed-up on the tip and located the car, which fled from police.

A witness said that while police were in pursuit, one of the officers rammed the back of the car, which spun out and came to a stop. Once police approached the car, Stephens shot and killed himself.

Stephens was the subject of a nationwide manhunt after he shot and killed 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. on April 16 and published a video of the slaying to Facebook. In earlier videos that he posted to his Facebook account — which has now been deleted — Stephens claimed that he had gone on a murder spree that saw him kill 13 others, though that claim was proven false by police.

Agencies had combined to offer up to a $50,000 reward for information leading to Stephens’ arrest, and he was believed to be in a five-state radius, including Pennsylvania.
