At the Coast Guard Academy’s commencement ceremony this morning, Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly joked that Donald Trump should use the ceremonial sword he was being presented with on the press.
Trump and Kelly both attended the Coast Guard Academy’s commencement on Wednesday and delivered remarks. After Trump was presented with the ceremonial saber, Kelly cracked a joke about attacking the news media to Trump as the president sat down.
“You can use that on the press,” Kelly joked.
In response, Trump laughed and said “yeah.”
Trump during his speech had talked at length about his belief that the news media is dishonest and that they treat him more unfairly than any politician in history.
“No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly,” Trump said.
When The New York Times reported on Tuesday that President Donald Trump tried to pressure James Comey to shut down his FBI investigation of Michael Flynn, one other surprising nugget from the story was the fact that Trump reportedly also told Comey that he should consider imprisoning reporters who publish classified information that is leaked to them.
“Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates,” The New York Times reported.
