President Donald Trump is continuing to publicly insult his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions.

Trump and Sessions have had a great relationship going back to August 2015, when Sessions appeared at a Trump rally and wore a Make America Great Again hat. But in recent weeks, that relationship has apparently soured, and The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that Trump has spoken with his advisors about the possibility of firing Sessions.

In light of that news, here’s a look at all of the negative comments Donald Trump has been making about Jeff Sessions.

In an Interview, Trump Said Sessions Should Have Never Recused Himself From the Russia Investigation

This recent wave of speculation of Jeff Sessions possibly being forced out of the White House started when Donald Trump spoke with The New York Times on July 19th.

In this interview, Trump made clear that he did not agree with Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Not only that, but he also said that if he knew Sessions was going to do this, he never would have picked him to be attorney general.

“Well, Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job, and I would have picked somebody else,” Trump said.

Trump went on to say that Sessions gave him “zero” warning that he was going to recuse himself and that he thinks this was a very unfair thing to do.

“So Jeff Sessions takes the job, gets into the job, recuses himself,” Trump told The New York Times. “I then have — which, frankly, I think is very unfair to the president. How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, ‘Thanks, Jeff, but I can’t, you know, I’m not going to take you.’ It’s extremely unfair, and that’s a mild word, to the president. So he recuses himself. I then end up with a second man, who’s a deputy.”

Trump Said That Sessions is ‘Beleaguered’ & Should Be Looking Into Hillary Clinton

A few days later, on July 24th, President Trump again called out Attorney General Jeff Sessions, this time on Twitter.

In an early morning tweet, Trump said that Sessions should be looking into Hillary Clinton’s “crimes” and her relationship with Russia. He also called Sessions “beleaguered.”

Later that same day, Attorney General Jeff Sessions was seen at the White House, as he had meetings with some White House staff including counsel Don McGahn.

However, CNN is reporting, that Trump and Sessions have not spoken since the New York Times interview.

On Tuesday morning, Trump again tweeted about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, making basically the same point that he made Monday but using stronger language.

This time, Trump said that Jeff Sessions has taken a very weak position on “Hillary Clinton crimes” and on intelligence leaks.

In another tweet, Trump suggested that Ukraine worked to boost Hillary Clinton during the election and asked Jeff Sessions why there isn’t an investigation into this. (Politico reported earlier this year that a Democratic operative who was looking into connections between Paul Manafort and Russia received guidance from the Ukrainian Embassy. DNC officials have denied that they coordinated with the operative.)

Anthony Scaramucci, White House Communications Director, Said That Trump ‘Probably’ Wants to Fire Sessions

Although this next comment did not come directly from Donald Trump, it did come from the White house via the nearly-hired communications director.

Anthony Scaramucci was recently interviewed by radio host Hugh Hewitt. Hewitt said that it’s pretty clear to him that Trump wants Sessions gone, and Scaramucci said that this is probably true.

“I have an enormous amount of respect for the attorney general, but I do know the president pretty well, and if there’s this level of tension in the relationship that, that’s public, you’re probably right,” Scaramucci said.

Scaramucci said earlier in the interview that Trump is “obviously frustrated” with Sessions. He also said that he suggested Trump and Sessions get together to talk about this but that Trump did not want to.

Trump Previously Insulted the Justice Department for Submitting a ‘Watered Down’ Travel Ban

This is not the first time that Donald Trump has broken with his own Justice Department.

Earlier this year, during the White House’s struggle to enact President Trump’s travel ban, a second version of the immigration executive order was submitted which, among other changes, removed all mentions of religion. It also provided a lot of exemptions that were not in the first order.

Trump subsequently complained about this revised version, calling it watered down and saying that the Justice Department, which Jeff Session is the head of, was being politically correct.
