Amaya was removed from Monday's Cactus League game against the Athletics due to left hip tightness. Amaya struck out in his lone plate appearance before departing. Competing for the White Sox' shortstop job this spring, Amaya has gone just 2-for-16 with eight strikeouts in nine Cactus League contests.
White Sox manager Will Venable said Monday that the time Montgomery missed with a back injury will not hurt his chances of making the Opening Day roster, Daryl Van Schuowen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Montgomery missed 10 days of action before returning to the lineup Sunday. The 23-year-old has accrued only nine plate appearances so far during Cactus League play, but Venable suggests Montgomery could still win the team's shortstop job, saying of the youngster that "there's been a lot of stuff here that we've evaluated," and the "most important thing is just that he's healthy." Brooks Baldwin, Chase Meidroth and Jacob Amaya are competing with Montgomery for the shortstop gig.
Clevinger (neck) struck out two batters over a perfect inning of relief Sunday in the White Sox's 1-0 loss to the Guardians in Cactus League play. Clevinger re-signed with the White Sox on a minor-league deal Feb. 21, but he didn't make his spring debut until Sunday while he completed his recovery from the disc replacement surgery he required for his neck back on Aug. 1. The 34-year-old righty retired the side in efficient fashion Sunday, needing just 11 pitches to complete a 1-2-3 inning. Clevinger has worked almost exclusively as a starter over parts of eight seasons in the big leagues, but he'll be vying for a late-inning relief role with Chicago while the organization prioritizes younger arms in the rotation.
Perez allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in his Cactus League start Wednesday against the Brewers. Perez is viewed as a veteran leader in an otherwise relatively inexperienced White Sox rotation. Davis Martin is expected to draw the Opening Day start, but Perez is also in consideration. Even after his shaky outing Wednesday, the southpaw stated he was happy with his stuff and was specifically working on getting the feel for his curveball, per Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Montgomery (back) will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Guardians. Montgomery will be making his first Cactus League appearance since Feb. 25, after back spasms kept him out of action for nearly two weeks. The 23-year-old shortstop is in contention for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he'll likely need a strong finish to the spring to earn his place with the big club. Coming off a 121-loss season, the White Sox have no visions of contending for a playoff spot in 2025, so they won't have much motivation to start Montgomery's service clock until they're fully confident that he's big-league ready.
Thorpe (elbow) will begin throwing live batting practice Tuesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Thorpe has been throwing bullpen sessions since mid-February, and he has now officially been cleared to face live hitters. The plan is for him to throw several rounds of live BP before getting into a routine of throwing every five days. Assuming all goes well, he'll then begin a rehab assignment with one of the White Sox's minor-league affiliates.
Cannon has allowed six earned runs across five innings in Cactus League action. Cannon has made two starts in the exhibition season, with his latest start coming Thursday. He allowed three home runs across three innings in that outing. The one positive is that Cannon has a 4:0 K:BB, and he is locked into a rotation spot to begin the regular season.
Clevinger (neck) is expected to make his spring debut Sunday, Lamond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Clevinger is competing for a bullpen role with the White Sox this spring after signing in late February. A neck injury ended his 2024 season, though he's been throwing live batting practice and will now be set for his spring debut.
