Boxing legend Mike Tyson announced his return date to the ring via his “Hotboxing with Mike Tyson” podcast. Per TalkSport’s Michael Benson, Tyson will fight on May 29 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Tyson did not yet announce who his opponent would be for his next boxing match, but most pundits expect Tyson to face longtime rival Evander Holyfield in a third showdown.
You can see journalist Michael Benson’s post about Tyson’s big news below.
Tyson vs. Holyfield 3
Tyson and Holyfield met twice during the 1990s, and Holyfield won both fights.
Holyfield stopped Tyson in the 11th round back in 1996 in one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight championship history.
Tyson and Holyfield met again the following year, and Tyson was disqualified after biting Holyfield’s ears in the infamous “Bite Fight”.
The two men have since developed a close bond, but it’s one that apparently wouldn’t keep the fighters from getting back into the ring together.
Why Holyfield Would Make Sense
Both Tyson, 54, and Holyfield, 58, appear to be in incredible shape in 2021.
In his last exhibition boxing bout, Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr. to an eight-round draw in November 2020 on Triller pay-per-view, but now the fighter would be stepping in the ring with a former heavyweight and cruiserweight champion.
Moreover, the presumed fight would give Tyson the opportunity to finally score a win over the fighter most historians consider to be his greatest rival.
Of course, that assumes Tyson is facing Holyfield next and not another fighter. News about Tyson’s next opponent hasn’t yet been released and confirmed, but at least there’s a date and venue for the fight now according to the boxing star.
More About Tyson and Holyfield
Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs) hasn’t fought since defeating Brian Nielsen via 10th-round stoppage in 2011. Holyfield was boxing’s first undisputed cruiserweight champion and he remains today the only heavyweight champion in boxing history to win at least a part of the world championship in the weight class four times.
Meanwhile, Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) hasn’t competed in a legitimate prizefight since losing via sixth-round stoppage to Kevin McBride back in 2005. Regardless, the “Baddest Man on the Planet” turned back the clock against Jones Jr. last year in an exhibition bout, and there was so much interest in the event that Tyson wants to do it again.
Both Tyson and Holyfield are generally considered by boxing historians to be among the best heavyweight champions in history. While Tyson’s last opponent, Jones Jr., did win a share of the heavyweight title during his Hall of Fame career, that fighter’s best weight classes were 160, 168 and 175.
So Tyson vs. Holyfield 3 would feature legit heavyweights, and the fight would be sure to generate tons of interest all over the globe.
