Eason has missed three straight games due to left lower leg injury management, but this is the first time he's initially drawn a questionable tag since his first absence during that stretch. If he's sidelined again, Cam Whitmore, Reed Sheppard and Jae'Sean Tate would remain candidates for slightly increased roles off the bench.
Brooks (ankle) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Pelicans. Brooks will miss a second straight game after being a late scratch ahead of Monday's win over the Hornets. Amen Thompson started in Brooks' absence against Charlotte, while the latter's next chance to suit up will come during the second half of a back-to-back set Friday versus Minnesota.
VanVleet had 20 points (8-16 FG, 3-8 3Pt, 1-1 FT), five rebounds, six assists and one block in 29 minutes during Monday's 114-101 win over the Hornets. VanVleet was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice for unknown reasons, but he was never listed on the injury report. He's had a relatively quiet December, posting averages of 14.4 points, 5.4 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 2.1 three-pointers over his last eight games. During that span, he shot just 34.2 percent from the field and 24.6 percent from beyond the arc.
Thompson notched 19 points (8-16 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 1-1 FT), 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal across 38 minutes during Monday's 114-101 win over the Hornets. Thompson got the start at power forward due to the absence of Dillon Brooks (ankle), and the second-year forward did an excellent job of filling out the stat sheet while leaving his mark on both ends of the court. Thompson's fantasy upside will be strictly tied to Brooks' availability, but it's undeniable that he's shown promise when given enough minutes. Across three starts this season, Thompson is averaging 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.7 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
Smith had 21 points (7-14 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 5-6 FT), 11 rebounds and two assists over 35 minutes during Monday's 114-101 win over the Hornets. Smith is going through his most productive stretch of the season and had another strong showing Monday, as he reached the 20-point mark just for the fourth time this season. The third-year forward is riding a streak of six game in a row with at least 13 points, hitting the 15-point mark four times and posting two double-doubles in that stretch. Smith is averaging 13.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game since the beginning of December.
Whitmore ended with 17 points (7-15 FG, 3-7 3Pt), seven rebounds, one block and two steals in 27 minutes during Monday's 114-101 victory over Charlotte. Whitmore was limited to just three appearances at the NBA level between Nov. 2 and Dec. 15, as he spent considerable time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G League, but his last two outings might lead to him earning more minutes in Ime Udoka's rotation. Whitmore has produced back-to-back double-digit scoring performances while shooting a combined 12-for-25 from the field in those outings.
Thompson is in the Rockets' starting lineup for Monday's game against the Hornets. Thompson will make his third start of the 2024-25 regular season Monday due to Dillon Brooks (ankle) being ruled out. In his last start Dec. 8 against the Clippers, Thompson finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in 39 minutes.
Brooks won't play in Monday's game against the Hornets due to right ankle soreness, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports. Brooks wasn't listed on the Rockets' injury report prior to being ruled out, and it's possible he tweaked his ankle during warmups. His absence should open up more opportunities for Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore. Brooks' next chance to play will come Thursday at New Orleans -- the first leg of a back-to-back set.
