Oakland Fire: How to Help Victims’ Families

Individual GoFundMe Accounts

Many individuals also have GoFundMe accounts set up so you can donate directly to families in need. Care should be taken to make sure these individual pages are truly supporting the families, as sometimes people have been known to create "scam accounts" on GoFundMe in victims' names. If you see a scam account, report it to GoFundMe. The pages set up to support individuals include the following. (GoFundMe)

Mike and Lisa Low put together a GoFundMe page to support Sara Hoda's family. Hoda was a victim in the fire and the only daughter of Fatima. The Lows said that Fatima has cared for their daughters for more than seven years and they were putting together the page to support her and help her pay for funeral expenses. So far, $1,050 has been raised.

This GoFundMe page was put together to support Alex Vega, who died in the fire. His brother, Daniel Vega, put together the page and shared it on Facebook. The page was put together to help cover future expenses as they deal with the tragic loss. So far more than $10,000 has been raised.

This GoFundMe page was put together for Michela Gregory, who died in the fire. Another page, here, was also put together to help Michela. The first page was put together by students who were part of the program where Michela was studying.

This GoFundMe page supports Jose Avalos, who survived the fire. He was living in the warehouse and was able to escape with his two dogs, but all his belongings were lost and nine of his friends died. These funds will help Jose get back on his feet.

This GoFundMe page supports Travis Hough's family. Travis died in the fire. The funds will help cover transportation, service and burial expenses, and time off work for his family to mourn.
