An Australian tourist was killed in San Francisco as a result of a verbal argument that erupted outside a hotel, police say.
Matthew Bate, 33, was identified as the slain tourist, according to KRON4.
Bate was killed in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco on June 2.

1. Bate Was Killed Near a Hotel in San Francisco
According to NBC Bay Area, the tourist was slain near Da Vinci Villa Hotel. It was not yet clear whether Bate was staying in the hotel, however, as details were still unfolding.
Police “found the victim severely injured from a physical altercation,” The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
2. The Death Stemmed From a Verbal Altercation
Bate and a “group of suspects” became involved in a verbal altercation, according to KRON 4.
“He was injured when the fight became physical,” the television station reported. It was not clear yet how specifically Bate was injured, by whom, and where.
Police have not specified which words were exchanged or what caused the physical fight.
3. Two Suspects Were Arrested in Connection With Bate’s Death

Although their identities have not yet been released, according to the Guardian, police have detained two suspects in connection with Bate’s death.
4. Bate’s Family Is Being Provided With Assistance to Travel to the U.S.
As Bate is from Australia, the Australian government has gotten involved.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing Bate’s family with consular assistance,” The Guardian reported, adding that the family has requested privacy.
5. Bate Was Visiting San Francisco as a Tourist
According to Australian news media, Bate was from Woolner. The police homicide unit is investigating the death, which occurred around 2 a.m. on June 2.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that there have been a series of crimes against tourists in what are normally low-crime areas of the city. The newspaper reported that no weapon was used in Bate’s death.
