Torres went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored Sunday against the Red Sox. Torres recorded his fifth multi-hit game this month while clubbing his 14th blast of the season. He's collected at least one hit in 13 of 14 Sept. contests, batting 20-for-59 (.339) with two homers, nine RBI and 11 runs scored.
Judge went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, two walks and a stolen base Sunday against the Red Sox. After going 16 games without a homer, Judge has now hit two over the past three games to reach 53 on the season. Judge also added his ninth stolen base, marking the second time this year he's gone yard and swiped a bag in the same game. While he's fallen off the pace to reach 60 home runs, all it will take is one of his patented hot streaks to challenge that threshold for the second time in his career. Through 148 games, Judge is slashing .321/.453/.687 with 53 homers, 132 RBI, 112 runs, nine steals and 122 walks across 659 plate appearances.
Rodon (15-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out five. Rodon served up a third-inning homer to Tyler O'Neill that, the fifth long ball he's allowed over the past four starts, otherwise held the Red Sox in check to collect his 15th win. Rodon recorded one out following a leadoff double in the sixth but was subsequently pulled after 88 pitches, rendering him two outs shy of a quality start. It was the seventh time in his last 10 starts that Rodon has allowed two runs or fewer over five or more innings, posting a 3.18 ERA across 56.2 innings with 74 strikeouts over that stretch. The veteran lefty is excelling as the Yankees are making their push toward the AL East pennant. Next up for the surging Rodon is a matchup in Oakland against the hapless A's.
Rizzo is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Rizzo started the previous 10 games but will hit the bench Sunday after going 5-for-33 with one double and four walks during that span. Oswaldo Cabrera will take over at first base and bat eighth in the series finale versus Boston.
Wells is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Wells worked behind the plate in the first three games of the series and will receive a break in the finale after going 1-for-11 with a walk and four strikeouts. Jose Trevino will do the catching for lefty Carlos Rodon.
Cole (6-5) took the loss Saturday as the Yankees were downed 7-1 by the Red Sox, surrendering seven runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two and hit three batters with pitches. The veteran righty threw only 38 of 68 pitches for strikes before getting the hook, and things began to unravel for Cole after he intentionally walked long-time nemesis Rafael Devers with the bases empty in the fourth inning -- a move that the rest of the Boston lineup seemed to take personally. It's the first time since July 6 that Cole has failed to last at least five innings, a 10-start stretch in which he's posted a 2.34 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 66:16 K:BB through 57.2 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Oakland.
Stanton isn't in the Yankees' lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Stanton will get a breather Saturday after tallying a base hit in both of the first two games of the series. His absence will put Aaron Judge into the DH spot while Alex Verdugo, Jasson Dominguez and Juan Soto form New York's outfield trio.
