Secretary of State John Kerry stepped in saying that if Texas executed Tamayo, it could create an international incident. The Mexican government has also come forward to condemn the action. According to the Mexican foreign ministry, Tamayo was not informed of his rights as a non-U.S. citizen at the time of his arrest.
