A 30-year-old former science teacher at a North Carolina high school is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student, police say.

Laura Hubman Garrigus, who taught at Cumberland International Early College on the Fayetteville State University campus, was arrested Monday and charged with four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student and two counts sexual offense with a student, WNCN-TV reports.

Garrigus, a married mother, is a resident of Fayetteville, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

1. She Resigned From Her Teaching Job in December After the Female Student Reported Her, Police Say

Laura Garrigus resigned from her job as a teacher at the Cumberland International Early College in December 2015 after the girl reported the alleged “inappropriate sexual relationship” to authorities, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office told WNCN-TV.

The student told police the “physical relationship” with her teacher began in October 2015.

School officials told WRAL-TV the alleged sexual assault occurred off campus and no other students are believed to be involved.

According to WRAL, the student was part of the school’s early college program, to which Garrigus was assigned.


2. She Is Married & Is the Mother of 3 Young Children

Laura Hubman Garrigus is married to a local police officer and has young children, according to her Facebook page. She has two sons and a daughter.

She posted the above photo to Facebook in November with the caption, “I’m a mother. A friend. Someone’s daughter. A teacher. A wife. You can call me names and tear me down, but you won’t win. HE loves me and that’s all I need to keep fighting the fight.”

She posted a photo with her husband on February 2, days before her arrest, and also posted the Bible quote, “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you,” which is from Luke 6:28.

On December 31 she posted a photo with the quote, “The best way to carry out your revenge on those who hate you is to forgive them. Nothing hurts them more.”

She has posted several other quotes, including one that says, “It is during the worst times in your life that you get to see the true colors of the people who say they care for you.”


3. She Is a Graduate of North Carolina State University

Garrigus, whose maiden name is Hubman, graduated from North Carolina State University, where she was a Dean’s List student in 2004, according to the Montgomery Herald. She is originally from Mount Gilead.

She previously taught at Scotland Early College High School in Laurinburg, North Carolina.


4. She Was a Biology Teacher & Helped Students Prepare for College

Garrigus taught biology at Cumberland International Early College. She was also taught academic college readiness.

She was also the teacher assigned to work on the school’s yearbook. On Edmodo, a social media page for teachers, she wrote, ” I love teaching, I have the best kids (biological and school), super duper husband and, yea.”

The school has about 250 students. They take high school level classes along with college courses at Fayetteville State University.

“It’s always a tragedy, but we follow procedure,” school superintendent Frank Till told the Fayetteville Observer. “We follow the law.”


5. She Is Barred From Being Around Anyone Under 18, Including Her Own Children

According to WTVD-TV, Garrigus was barred from being with anyone under the age of 18, including her own three children by District Court Judge Cheri Siler-Mack, if she is released on bail.

“Not even my own children?” Garrigus asked the judge, according to the news station. “You will not be around any child under the age of 18,” Siler-Mack repeated.

WTVD said Garrigus become visibly disturbed by those instructions.

Garrigus was booked into the Cumberland County Jail, according to online court records.

She is being held on $150,000 bail.

It is not clear if she has an attorney and a call for comment was not immediately returned.

She is due back in court in March.
