Legendary physicist Stephen Hawking has come out against Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, saying that he doesn’t understand how the New York businessman is so popular.
In a new interview on ITV’s morning show, Hawking said that Trump is “a demagogue who appeals to the lowest common denominator.”
This was not the only political statement Hawking made during his appearance on the show. The scientist also argued that the UK should be kept in the European Union, appealing to voters ahead of a June 23 referendum.
“Gone are the days we could stand on our own against the world,” Hawking said. “We need to be part of a larger group of nations, both for our security and our trade.”
Trump has not yet responded to Hawking’s comment.
