During the second presidential debate on Tuesday, Donald Trump contradicted his own running mate’s position on Syria.
In a discussion about foreign policy, the topic of Syria came up, and Martha Raddatz read back a quote of Mike Pence’s from the vice presidential debate. Pence said that provocations by Russia need to be met with American strength, and that the U.S. should be prepared to use military force to strike targets in Syria.
Trump seemed surprised by the quote, as if he was hearing it for the first time and did not know Pence’s position beforehand.
“He and I haven’t spoken and I disagree,” Trump said.
Trump went on to say that the U.S. should work with Russia to “knock the hell out of ISIS.”
