The U.S. Senate is set to vote on the nomination of Betsy DeVos on Tuesday.
The DeVos vote is expected to take place around 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time. It can be streamed live in the embedded YouTube player via PBS.
This vote comes after Democrats held the floor of the Senate for 24 hours to speak against Betsy DeVos. This was not a filibuster, but rather an attempt to draw attention to the DeVos vote and convince at least one Republican senator to join them in not voting for her as Education secretary.
Two Republicans have said they will vote against DeVos: Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
““The mission of the Department of Education is broad, but supporting public education is at its core,” Senator Susan Collins said on the floor of the Senate this week. “I am concerned that Mrs. DeVos’ lack of experience with public schools will make it difficult for her to fully understand, identify, and assist with those challenges, particularly for our rural schools in states like Maine.
Collins and Murkowski voting no on DeVos would bring the vote to 50-50, in which case Mike Pence would come in to serve as the tie-breaking vote.
If one Republican joins Collins and Murkowski in voting against DeVos, she will not be approved, but at this time it does not seem that any other Republicans plan to vote no.
