Melania Trump wore a black sparkling outfit with wide black belt worth almost $10,000 to her husband’s speech to Congress – a look that was somewhat reminiscent to a gown from the television show, Dynasty.
The First Lady, who has become a style icon to some and criticized by others, took a seat in front of First Daughter Ivanka Trump, who was wearing red. (Some Democratic women wore white to the presidential speech in order to honor the suffragist movement.)
According to Yahoo News, the jacket alone retails for $4,995 and is described by Michael Kors, the designer, as “A black-tie suit, shaped, slit and exquisitely embellished—sexy this season is sly.” Yahoo added that the matching skirt retails for $4,595 and also quoted Kors as saying, “This neatly tailored dinner jacket is hand-embroidered by artisans in Italy with 3-D floral sequins for luxe appeal.” Kors is an American designer born in Long Island, according to Time Magazine.
Here’s a video of Melania’s entrance in the black outfit, reportedly from designer Kors’ spring 2017 collection:
And here is another look at Melania’s black dress:
Some people thought the dress was a little too sparkly for a Joint Session of Congress and was more suitable for the Academy Awards or a similar event.
Others applauded the look and the fact Melania received a standing ovation from some.
Here’s a closer look:
Earlier in the day, Melania Trump wore a red dress when she appeared with her husband for a bill signing on women in STEM fields. During the speech to the Joint Session of Congress, Donald Trump was expected to outline his plans on immigration and other policy topics.
Ivanka Trump chose red for the Congressional speech:
Melania’s appearance was, of course, far more than a fashion statement. FLOTUS was sitting in a section with the family members of people killed by illegal immigrants. For example, seated in her section were two widows of law enforcement officers who were gunned down in 2014; an undocumented immigrant who was previously twice deported is on trial for their deaths. Melania also was in a section with Megan Crowley, a young girl with a rare disease who earlier met with the president.
